You'll want to visit Mt Wellington summit for the magnificent views, mountain wilderness ambience and it's unique alpine ecosystem. Sunset is magic from the summit on a clear evening. Drive extra carefully at this time because this is when you'll see wildlife on the roads.
Before heading off look up at the summit. If you can't see it chances are it's cold, damp and foggy up there. Don't expect any views from the top unless the cloud is very low and you happen to be able to see over it. If you can see snow you may not be able to drive all the way to the top as the gates will be closed. You might get as far as The Springs where you can still check out the views and enjoy playing in the snow. Allow extra time because when it snows this is one of the few places in Hobart where traffic is a problem!
Most days you'll be able to see the summit from Hobart no problems - then you're in for a 360 degree panoramic views of the Derwent River Estuary and the South West Wilderness World Heritage Area.
Getting there from Hobart is quick and easy. It's only a 30 minute drive of about 22kms. Start on Davey Street (it's one way) and keep in the right lane. Otherwise you'll end up on the Southern Outlet heading for Kingston. Countinue through South Hobart and eventually on to Fern Tree (route B64). You'll then come to a very sharp and well sign posted right turn. This is the Pinnacle Road (C616) that will take you all the way to the top.
